Grab the latest driver for your card here, i assume you still have the 6870 card you mentioned.
http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx < look the right side of the page and follow the guide and download the latest driver for your system.
    Do not install it yet.

Now grab driver-sweeper make sure its the latest one.
    http://phyxion.net/Driver-Sweeper/Driver-Sweeper/

Install / Run it, clean all AMD based drivers out.

Reboot, and install your freshly downloaded AMD driver

On some computers after using driver-sweeper You have to install the AMD catalyst & driver twice to get the correct installation(Sometimes the first one gives errors but dont worry about that - Just reboot and then re-install the driver again)

    Short version.

    Get latest AMD driver
    Get latest driver-sweeper
    Run/Install driver-sweeper
    Clean AMD drivers.
    Reboot
    Install AMD driver
    Reboot
    Install AMD driver
    Reboot

    == profit

Im not going into more details about optimizing your performance since theres tons of help to find everywhere and google is there aswell, but over all you should be able to get steady fps with many of the solutions you already can find,.

Btw what anti virus are you running, wich OS?
