View Full Version : HDR?
Will CSPromod be using HDR(High Dynamic Range)? This seems to cause problems for people with ATi cards, especially for 4800 series.

I think HDR affects competitive play, due to the fact that it makes things brighter than usual, soft lighting, etc. A person without HDR would have an easier time seeing the enemy =P. Maybe later on they could add it =P.

and it uses hardware-resources, so imo it shouldn't be included

could be coolio, just turn it off if you don't want it.
for movies and spectating and shit it could be neat.

This. While we prefer performance while playing, when watching a movie/match, a more graphical detailed game provides more entertainment.
And since the point of the mod is to attract more sponsors (which are mainly big industries from the computer business), I don't see why we shouldn't make all the features the Source engine has to offer available. It's not like you have to bear with it anyway: you don't like it, you turn it off :).
The problem is though, even if you have it turned off, you get bugs. The ATi 4800 series, has real problems with certain lighting, especially on de_nuke and de_train, the only way you can get rid of the bug, is if you put your direct x level to 8.1 or 8.5, otherwise you can't see from top of ladder to hut, on nuke, you just get this massive beam of light which obscures your view, same with look from hut towards top of ladder.
Personally, if you're going to make the game as bug free as possible, which I guess you are, you'll want to take this onboard, as this is probably the biggest bug in CSS which they refuse to fix.

HDR would definitely be great for entertainment purposes, but for competitive play it isn't necessary.

Somehow make HDR a CSPTV only option? Maybe that would get fix the "bug" while maintaining spectator eye candy.

HDR is baked into maps

you want tools nowadays that use more computer resources. this version of counter strike is a visual upgrade and IMO it needs to eat as much FPS as possible to keep it up-to-date, but still keeping the gameplay.

I know a lot of CS 1.6 movies which are very entertaining!
I agree on the general consensus, should be off for any kind of gameplay but on if moviemakers want it.

well obviously if you want to play with it on you could but I mean pretty much everyone would play without it since it's annoying :P

I never said they weren't. I also do enjoy quite a lot of 1.6 movies. My point was: when you're watching a movie, you expect to see a good looking game, no matter how bad it looks when you play it (for the sake of performance). It's the same thing as using high-quality textures or widescreen resolution when making 1.6 movies. You don't play using it, but it makes a movie a lot more "watchable" when the maker uses them because the game looks better, and better looks = more entertainment when it comes to movies, that's just the way it is :).

All the visual features the source engine csp is using should definitely be implemented to have an overall better looking game, and just have highly customizable configs. The more options you can give the more successful a game will be.

This.
Also, some of you seem to have a weird understanding as to what HDR is.

While it would be nice for people to continue playing new games with old hardware, that's just not going to work. As Mith says, sponsors want gamers to upgrade their hardware, and they'll only continue to support a game that profits them. If ATi wants to stay in the game, they'll make a model that supports the engine. That said, always check before buying new hardware if it does what you want it to.

What I find ironic is that the source engine was built around the ATI gpu, yet the ATI card has more problems than nvidia

no, great gameplay makes a game successful regardless of all the fancy options. I'm all for options so long as all the default settings are what most people agree upon as being the best setting and as long as you take care of the way the game feels before you focus on how it looks.
