Please keep in mind that this is the layout base, I'll change half the map if I have to just to make it better,
we're going to start with this one and probably change it a little bit over the course of development but at
least you get a rough idea of what we're aiming for at this point.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't you need the updated particle system from the OB engine to make any close to decent rain in the Source engine?

I know you can do some pretty good looking rain (and not hurt performance much) with it, but I've never seen it done in the Ep1 engine.

well yeah but the problem is what that much rain it'd get in the way of gameplay and a lot of people would whine about it. I want to find the correct balance between the two :)

that's the idea, at least half the intensity and half the volume for the rain sound would be about right. If it was that loud it'd get in the way of gameplay and enemy sound positioning.

Well obviously there are a lot of conservative players out there but sometimes you have to force their hands to try it and then after a while if they don't like it, fine. But the problem is to get them to give it a try first, they might enjoy it in the end :P

This might be a hard one to pull off, but we'll see. You should do some map beta testing and choose a few people to give you some input! :D

Doesn't HAVE to be CSP beta testers. It could be a good way to involve the community a bit. ;)

edit: I don't remember who it was, but it was a while ago. Someone was working on a map for csp and got a few people to beta test it. We all got in vent, scrimmed a few times on the map, found a few bugs, made a few suggestions, and had a good time! :D

Will probably be csp betatesters so we can combine both csp testing and map testing :) I'm going to build a base 3D stuff with dev textures to test layout and tweak it like that :)

Don't necessarily reduce the volume by much - movement-masking sounds would simply help the map to have an increased pace like CS 1.6 currently has thanks to Russian walking.

In a thread a while back I suggested that a mapper should try making a partially snow-covered map where the footsteps on the snow parts are really soft, to achieve a similar effect, and people said "this is not a suitable replacement for Russian walking because it doesn't give the player a choice about when to be silent". Frankly, though, the main argument for the Russian walk bug is that it increases the pace of the game, not that it gives more choice to the player, and an environmental feature that cuts down on audibility is an easy and realistic way of achieving this.

Also, I like the idea that some maps would have different levels of audibility to others - it's not a game feature, just a map feature, so if the gameplay turns out poor, there's no loss except on the part of the mapper who wasted time adding some snow or rain or whatever.

i thought y'all didnt want any ambient sounds? why dont you do a map that is snowing, that way you wouldnt have the sound in the background and still have a cool effect.

EDIT:
mang, the only problem w/ your logic is that when you have the snow on the ground, you would know which areas of the map that would be susceptible to people sneaking up on you. with russian walking it could happen anywhere. (i still like your idea tho)

This map sounds very interesting and I think it has great potential but why call it CSP_Fall?

I understand rain fall but it just reminds me of the season fall rather than what its suppose to be.

Just saying.

Either way I'm looking forward to this map.

No offense alba, but it sounds kind of weird to say "lets play fall". It sounds good to hear "Let play inferno/d2/nuke/mill/etc.", but it doesn't sound right to me for "fall".

I'm sure the name csp_storm would be disappointing to many people who expected it to be a remake of de_storm.

@downbad, I realise that crouch-running gives more freedom to the player who wants to go undetected, but I don't think that freedom is necessarily a good thing. It essentially takes footstep noises out of the game, especially at LAN tournaments with a lot of background noise. The only strong argument in favour of it is that it changes the pace of the game, and having partially snow-covered maps is a very different way of achieving a similar pace by encouraging players to run in certain parts of the map.

but de_aztec will never be a competitive map anymore and there isent any other aztec map :D

Damn, man. This sounds like it could be a really awesome map. It could have a unique atmosphere (look at all common 1.6 maps, they are all generally the same).

When I first saw the title I thought of like an autumn atmosphere. Maybe some dead leaves lying around, possibly gloomy look. Maybe just how it looks and feels on halloween night in a way.. Autumn tone ^^

The rainfall idea sounds great and I know you can find the right balance. I love seeing maps in different atmospheres especially when tehy are made by a creative person who knows themes.

I'm really eager to see/play this map! I'm all worked up now ><

I have a mapper. I'm just so busy with so much stuff to do, I first need to finish the proper concept/layout which I've been drawing then have mike go over it since he's good at balancing and then give it to my mapper for him to start doing the basic layout in 3D and that's when we'll start testing it with the beta testers :)

busy on csp and my layout is about half done in terms of planning so. I have lots of priorities before I can come back to it but I got my translation thanks to Alexei and I'll be able to start my decals soon :O)

I was considering having a little bit of both maybe a bit of snow and some rain I haven't decided yet, it's what makes the most sense in the end.

Not quite, I want this to be a competitive map so it'll be really light, even if it doesn't really make sense I want it to be light enough and retain my idea for the rain and it may be something most people think of rain like really hard crazy rain that doesn't stop at all. My idea is more of a peaceful rain and if it's possible in the engine to have it stop a bit and then start again I don't know. It's all ideas just now :)

We've got a base map file right now and we're going to be revising the layout a few times before adding any details, the process of making this map is unlike anything i've done before since I'm going with ideas first over layout and building the layout directly in 3D and extensively testing it ingame before adding any details so we can move anything around quickly. It's taking a lot of thinking and I really, really want this map to become something players like and something that's extremely competitive :)

I've done some start of texture and a base of logo that i'm almost done but you'll hear or see more about it when we reach something that's a bit better (even with dev textures) I plan on updating the community regularly and ask for feedback/ideas!

And yes I'm taking this map very seriously because we need new maps. I'm tired of remakes. I want old cs to be back, people finding new spots and making new strategies. dust2 and the others are fine but new stuff is exciting too :O

I'll make sure to do 100 betas if I have to to make it perfect.

When CZ was somewhat alive, the thing I loved most about it was the variety of maps that were used in leagues.

There were so many good/new maps that were always fun to play. (Silo, freight, karnak, arsenal, and all the variations of the default maps)

D2, Inferno, Nuke, and Train are all fun maps, but it's great to see NEW maps.

Yeah I've played all the classic competitive maps literally thousands of times each. I'm dead tired of those maps. So a map like alba's is a wish come true. To see you putting so much dedication into it gives me a lot of hope this project won't die and will become great.

And if j0lt sticks to his aztec (which i'm sure he will), we can all look forward to a very awesome gaming experience with csp 8-) . There's also a few other promising projects in production =D

Btw dusk sounds perfect... with the sun setting in the horizon and everything haha. Man, can hardly wait for some of these maps.

While we're talking about the slogan... "Good." implies that you are assuming every person does indeed have a jacket at hand. I think "Good" should be omitted but w/e it's just a slogan!

Crates are not needed anymore with todays creativity. Over at Lanmaniax (http://www.lanmaniax.com/) you have some nice maps without necessarily using too many crates.

I know. But there are never too many crates! This is CS we live for crates :lol:
On a more serious note, the crates are just a simple way to look at how to block layout for the time being, obviously there are way too many right now but i'm gonna move them around or add some or remove some but it's just to see how I can turn things around depending on what happens during the development.

Right now I've still got a few things I want to fix and change, I just posted what I had.

The only similarities are that both have a T spawn, CT spawn, B site, A site, Mid just like every other de_ map made. Oh and maybe that banana-shaped path in bottom left corner.

Again, all maps nowa days are guaranteed to replicate another map is some form. There's an overflow of content, it's just bound to happen. It's like music.

Little backstory here. The map is csp_fall and "fall" is what I've decided to name my fictional Russian terrorist group within the map. So they're gonna have some branded box and shit inside the map to give it its own look and so on.

So the logo text is "Fall" and the sub-text is the slogan which basically means "In the end, they will all ... (fall) ..."

There you go :P

That's actually something I don't want to allow since it would break the balance of the game and everyone would go without rain because it'd be easier. I want to make this map have a unique setting and be the same for everyone. I want to at least give a try to rain and make it as competitive as can be but obviously down the line if the rain doesn't work and everyone is against it I'll have to remove it but for now I'll try everything I can to make people accept it in the map. Besides it's not going to rain on the whole map since I have split one bombsite outside, one inside and some parts of the map will be covered so it won't rain everywhere. Trust me I know how important the cs gameplay is and how maps should be worked around with to get the best results.

The only thing I don't want is to play de_dust2 for the next 20 years. You just need to focus on the competitive side of things before thinking about making "a pretty map" or something like that. I'll do my best to make sure it looks good and clean and at the same time is original enough that down the line people would go "I think you should use fall theme for this map" instead of "I think you should use inferno theme for this map". Way too many people just make industrial looking map that's really generic.

CS had a lot of variety when it came out. You got dust2, inferno, aztec etc and all of them have distinct style which is what I want. SOMETHING NEW!

I know that it refers to rainfall, but in English usage that meaning is simply not readily understood and doesn't offer a snappy description of the map. On top of that, there is the issue with people in the USA using "Fall" to refer to autumn, the season.

Alba, I know you are a crazy perfectionist, and I hope you take this concern into consideration. I think CSP_fall works fine as a codename or temporary name for the project, but I think the name needs to be given more thought once the map is complete.

It's true. Probably because industrial textures are so common and pointless areas with a lot of containers for cover are most easily explained by sticking a forklift in there somewhere and calling it a warehouse, factory or dock.

Anything else requires more planning. Most people just jump in and make a map.

But that's why artist and level designer are two different roles. Maybe the mod community should start working in teams to make levels. That would raise the overall quality and allow people to concentrate on mastering one aspect of game design at a time.

I'd like to quickly update you guys on the progress of csp_fall
The basic building of the map is done since mid february and we feel that it's now pretty solid. Although we spent a lot of time working on csp_fall from mid february to late february resulting in fast and efficient progress, things have been really slow lately.
I'll start working again on the map during the upcoming days so we can make a proper update with screenshots and detailed information next week. Like Alba said we're still using dev textures, we want to make sure that every part of the map has been fully tested before I start working on the visual part.

Yeah, real busy these days. Got my new blog design, portfolio design, finishing scripting/tweaking colors of the new vgui stuff for 1.05, scoreboard icons and countless of other things.

I had an overview for the map but some part just didn't work and I wanted to rework them so I've changed quite a bit of things on it and since it's not completely finished right now, red can't work on the map. I should be able to finish this soon, I hope :P
